Temporalities: Recurring Imponderables

9 March 2019

Saturday 9 March, 3.00 – 4.00pm

In this talk, Adrian Heathfield looks at how performances, rather than being static historical objects, are things which morph over time. Focusing on numerous different reiterations of a well-known performance, he will discuss how a work becomes something other than itself in the event of its enactment. He will think through the implications of the contingency of performance for our understandings of documents, archives and art history.

Co-organised by Camden Arts Centre and the Sotheby's Institute of Art, Temporalities explores artistic practices that engage with notions of time and duration. This new series of talks will focus on media streams and the temporalities of the digital; practices addressing the temporal dimensions of contemporary labour; and artistic efforts to contest imposed cadences.

Adrian Heathfield writes on, curates and creates performance. He is the author of Out of Now, a monograph on the artist Tehching Hsieh, editor of Ally and Live: Art and Performance and co-editor of Perform, Repeat, Record. He co-curated the Live Culture events at Tate Modern, London (2003) and a number of other performance and durational events in European cities over the last eighteen years. He was curator of Doing Time, the Taiwan Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale (2017), a curatorial adviser and attaché for the 20th Biennale of Sydney (2016) and an artistic director with the collective freethought of the 2016 Bergen Assembly, Norway. He is Professor of Performance and Visual Culture at University of Roehampton, London. Read more
