Polly Apfelbaum stated ' The beads started out as an excuse to buy beads and necklaces at Ponta Portese Market in Rome. I was in residence at the American Academy there. I then started incorporating found beads into installations and when I got back to the US I started making my own beads of ceramics.'
Polly Apfelbaum was born in 1955 in Pennsylvania. Polly Apfelbaum has been showing consistently in New York and abroad since her first one-person show in New York in 1986. Apfelbaum is best known for her brilliantly coloured floor pieces, composed of patches of hand-dyed fabrics arranged into “fallen paintings”. More recently she has created an ongoing series of highly coloured and tactile ceramics. Her work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern of Art, New York; The Whitney Museum of Art of American Art, New York; Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; The Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; The Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia; and the National Academy Museum, New York. She is represented by Frith Street Gallery.
