TECH: Defining Generations

7 – 29 September
Kingsgate Gallery, NW6 2JG
Map

Throughout September, our Front of House Volunteers present an evolving exhibition at Kingsgate Gallery. TECH: Defining Generations investigates how technology has altered artistic production by travelling through the memories and personal histories of eight artists. The artists’ works present various lines of enquiry, exploring and exposing a fear of technology; using technology as an aid and looking at how mass production has transformed craft traditions. Ultimately this exhibition questions how technology affects the way we communicate and interact in our everyday lives.

The project is supported by Camden Arts Centre and Kingsgate Workshops Trust and aims to develop and nurture young artists, curators, art educators and administrators of the future.

Artists include Andre Mesquita, Anya Mustoo, Bernard Yeung, Frances Copeman, Heidi Ferid, Katrina Choy, Liam Mcgarry and Marnie Watts. The exhibition has been organised by Alex Beck, Joanna Sawkins, Laura Martin, Melanie Segall, Michela Valsania and Sarah Blum.

Closing Party: Agency of Noise presents 'Squirmish at the Oasis'
Friday 27 September, 6.00 – 9.00pm
Kingsgate Gallery

A night of live investigations into the agency and affect of performing noise in a gallery context.

With transmissions from:
Daisy Dixon
Polly Fibre
Dane Sutherland
Marnie Watts

Is it a paradox to perform noise or incorporate noise in performance, when performance is intentional/staged/organised and noise is unwanted/accidental/disturbing? Does noise lose its agency when intentionally provoked for musical or other artistic purposes?

Agency of Noise promotes ideas of the post-digital, where there is a move towards a somewhat primal sound-making impetus despite, or perhaps because of, the myriad of options and avenues that the digital revolution opened up. The concern is not necessarily or solely with sound-in-itself but with a wider cultural reading of how constructed noise functions within certain contemporary contexts.

Drawbot
Saturday 28 September, 2.00 – 5.00pm
Kingsgate Gallery

Artist Frances Copeman will lead Drawbot, a workshop exploring how to create art using scientific knowledge. Drawbot will give young people the opportunity to build a simple electric circuit using a battery and a hobby motor, to make a machine that nonsensically scribbles.

Please email [email protected] to sign up for this free workshop.

Artists’ in-conversation with Gina Buenfeld
Saturday 28 September, 1.00 – 2.30pm
Kingsgate Gallery

Gina Buenfeld, Exhibition Organiser at Camden Arts Centre, will lead an informal discussion with all eight artists in the exhibition.

En Plein Drawing
Sunday 29 September, 2.00 – 5.00pm
Kilburn Grange Park and Kingsgate Gallery

Artist Michela Valsania leads this workshop, inviting young participants to Kilburn Grange Park to connect with the environment through drawing and writing. All drawings will be collected and assembled onto old images of the park to make a collage combining past, present and future.

This is the second part to the En Plein Drawing workshop which took place at the Kilburn Festival in July. This will be an opportunity for those who previously participated to come along and see the evolution of the project, and for new participants to contribute to the work, which will be exhibited at Kingsgate Gallery.

Please email [email protected] to sign up for this free workshop.
