Spiral 2010 - Camden Art Centre

To celebrate 20 years of our Artist-in-Residence Programme, we dedicated August 2010 to a unique and exciting artists’ platform

Three artists, Serena Korda, Emma Wolukau-Wanambwa, and Hayley Newman and the Gluts from our past programme are invited back to the Artists’ Studio for one week each to develop a new, collaborative piece of work. Visitors of all ages are invited to open-studio events throughout the month to participate in each project’s development. The residencies culminate at our annual Spiral Festival held on the bank holiday weekend 28 – 29 August 2010.

Serena Korda
DECOSA Traditional, Stockholm Keifer/pin
3 – 8 August 2010

Korda’s project interweaves connections between sculpture, performance, ritual and the absurd. Throughout her residency the studio is filled with large, yet deceptively light sculptural objects which visitors are invited to use to build their own monumental sculptures. Korda records these processes and actions during the week, using this footage she works alongside professional dancers to develop a ritualised dance to be performed during the Spiral 2010 festival weekend.

Emma Wolukau-Wanambwa
Instrumental Break
10 – 15 August 2010
Emma Wolukau-Wanambwa pieces together, from official and unofficial recordings, the instrumental break performances of the lead singers of iconic British bands such as Coldplay, Iron Maiden, The Rolling Stones and The Who. She then works with a choreographer to learn how to perform instrumental breaks just like they do. In doing so, Wolukau-Wanambwa places, in the centre of the frame, an element of live stadium rock that is systematically marginalised in its official representations, suggesting how these moments of peripheral performance might be read when performed by different bodies.

Hayley Newman and the Gluts
Cafe Carbon goes viral
17 – 22 August 2010

Gina Birch, Kaffe Matthews & Hayley Newman are collectively The Gluts. For their Sprial residency at Camden Arts Centre, The Gluts make music videos/viral videos from a selection of songs from their previous Café Carbon cycle using the studio to plot, make props, film and rehearse the works. The videos are made in a variety of styles from intervention of the public space to Busby Berkley styled dance routines.
