This was the first exhibition in London of the work of the important young New York-based artists Oliver Herring.
Arising from a response to the death of performance artist Ethyl Eichelberger, Herring developed a method for constructing his work by using the intensely meditative process of knitting, through which he literally marked time. His work could be seen as a meditation on the passage of life, its construction and its unravelling.
Herring used mathematical calculations when making the initial determination of shape and constructs the work using transparent tape, its light reflective nature suggesting a purity and preciousness beyond the quality of the inexpensive material, and silver mylar which appears weighty and rigid in contrast to its pliable nature.
Herring trained at both the Ruskin School of Drawing. Oxford, where he graduated in 1988 and New York’s Hunter College where he took his MA.
