In Polanski's sinister, classic, Parisian tale, a new tenant finds the neighbours have designs on his life. Trelkovsky, a Polish file clerk in Paris, moves into a new apartment in the city. The previous tenant lies in a coma in a hospital. Trelkovsky starts to suspect his new neighbours who are an assortment of old recluses and busybodies. While visiting the ex-tenant in the hospital, Trelkovski meets his girlfriend Stella.
