Phoebe Cummings - Camden Art Centre

Phoebe Cummings was awarded the second Camden Art Centre Ceramics Fellowship. The Fellowship supports artists extending the possibilities of working with clay

It offers space and resources to research, develop and produce new work while engaging in discussions around contemporary ceramics.

Cummings creates sculptural installations which change over time. She approaches clay as a sculptural material; primarily interested in its changes of state and materiality. For the Fellowship Cummings continued this line of enquiry, focusing on how objects begin to enact their own performances within enclosed and controlled environments. Cummings engaged with Camden Art Centre’s education programme, organising an ongoing ‘Laboratory of Ideas’ including symposia, collaborations with art schools, workshops and teaching on the Ceramics Courses.

Garden Project: Wednesday 27 – Sunday 31 March

Phoebe Cummings created a temporary work within the garden, exploring the natural formation of clay through the weathering of rocks. This builds on Cummings’ interest in material performance and conversations held with scientists as part of her ongoing research during the Fellowship.
