Mark Gertler (1891 – 1939) was prominent in a generation of Jewish artists which helped transform art in this country in the first decades of this century.
His contemporaries included Jacob Epstein and David Bomberg; with their experience of other cultures they became a crucial channel for new ideas to enter British artistic life.
The major retrospective surveys Gertler’s career in sixty-seven paintings and drawings from private and public collections. Included amongst works that have seldom been exhibited is the masterpiece of the artist’s mid-career; Coster Family on Hampstead Heath (1924) has not been exhibited in Britain for over sixty years. Gertler loved this part of London, where he lived and worked from 1915 until his death.
