Nomadic Landmass

Geological phenomena is central to the work of Glasgow-based artist Ilana Halperin. Apparently remote processes of the earth are movingly tied to the stories of communities and individuals. Halperin’s work links geology to her daily life. She has celebrated her birthday with a volcanic island ‘born’ the same day and boiled milk in the hot sulphur spring of an active crater. Her residency takes the form of discussions with specialists and research at the Geological Society in London. Documenting her investigation, Halperin presents public lectures and film screenings.

Halperin binds together personal, historic and environmental events through lecture performances, photographs, video, sound, drawing and text. Previous endeavours have taken her from Karst Mountains in Eldfell Volcano Iceland and the cave networks of Slovenia.
