Talk: Julian Stair, Eva Masterman and Jackson Sprague

Wednesday 1 November, 7.00 – 8.00pm

Artists Julian Stair, Eva Masterman and Jackson Sprague reflect on the aesthetic consideration of living and making. Sprague and Masterman discuss their recent residency in Japan, considering the influence of Japanese culture and traditional Japanese ceramics on contemporary artists working with clay.

This event runs in conjunction with our art theory course led by Julian Stair. A complimentary ticket to this talk is included as part of the course.

Julian Stair is one of the UK’s leading potters. He studied at Camberwell School of Art and the RCA. He has exhibited internationally since 1982 and has work in 30 public collections. Julian is a leading historian of English studio ceramics. He completed a PhD at the RCA researching the critical origins of English studio pottery and has written extensively on the subject. Publications include The Body Politic: The Role of the Body in Contemporary Craft, Crafts Council, 2000 and Contemporary Clay and Museum Culture, Co-editor with C. Brown & C. Twomey, Routledge, 2016. 

Eva Masterman is a London based artist who recently completed an MA in Ceramics at the Royal College of Art. She works with clay and plaster as a sculptural medium and regularly teaches ceramics and casting at Camden Arts Centre. She was the recipient of the 2016 Anthology Art Prize at the Charlie Smith Gallery, and the 2016 Royal British Society of Sculptors Bursary.  She also works in a social outreach art collective, collectiveMATTER, which was selected for the 2016 Tate Exchange Programme.

Jackson Sprague (born 1982, Devon, lives and works in London) gained an MA from Royal College of Art and BA from Goldsmiths College.
