Get the Message 2016- 2017 - Camden Art Centre

2016 - 2017

Get the Message is a long running collaborative project between Camden Arts Centre, young people with learning disabilities, teachers and artists. The project aims to challenge perceptions through collaborative activities which champion all forms of communication and self-expression. Through encounters with contemporary art practice both in galleries and working with artists, Get the Message offers innovative approaches to working with young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities.

This year we are working with artists Andrew Omoding, Betsy Dadd and Linda Stupart, partnering with Action Space to support an artist with learning disabilities to co-lead the project.

Our partner SEN schools are from the boroughs of Camden, Brent and Barnet and each school visits CAC twice a term across a whole academic year, using the exhibitions and their experiences at Camden Arts Centre as a starting point towards creating artwork. The year culminates in an exhibition of students’ work and a series of events in July 2017.

Get the Message has been running since 2002.

Get the Message Exhibition: Agency / Autonomy / Automation

Adam Walker, Emma McGarry

9 – 17 July 2016, Artists’ Studio

Get the Message is a Camden Arts Centre project working with young people and teachers from local Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools and artists. During the 2015 –16 academic year, artists Adam J. B. Walker and Emma McGarry have worked with students from The Bridge and The Village Schools, using the exhibitions and their experiences at Camden Arts Centre as a starting point towards creating artwork.

The theme for the year was formed around a word matrix, considering ideas such as gesture, risk and choice as starting points for the workshops. This exhibition presents a space for ‘happenings’ and will be activated at various points throughout the show.

During June 2016 the artists carried out a research residency to explore the collaborative practice that has developed during their time leading the project. This culminates in a performance which takes place during the exhibition celebration, and families and young artists from the participating schools will be activating and occupying the space throughout the exhibition.

Get the Message: Making Something Adding More

Saturday 8 – Sunday 16 July 2017, Artists’ Studio

Get the Message is a Camden Arts Centre project working with young people and teachers from local Special Education Needs (SEN) schools in collaboration with artists and our partner ActionSpace. During the 2016 – 2017 academic year, artists Andrew Omoding, Betsy Dadd, Linda Stupart have worked with Swiss Cottage, Mapledown and Woodfield Schools in the boroughs of Camden, Brent and Barnet.

This year has focused on transformation, using materials, colour and layers to create objects, drawings, prints, projections, costumes and ceramics. The exhibition presents the work created over the last 12 months as one immersive installation. The artists have reworked the artworks as a way of curating the show, taking the lead for the aesthetics of the space from the students: making something, adding more.

Supported by BBC Children in Need, The Big Give, The Childhood Trust, City Bridge Trust, The Herefordshire Community Foundation, John Horniman’s Children’s Trust, The Sobell Foundation and gifts in memory of Peter Cross.
