Get the Message

Running since 2002, Get the Message is a collaborative project between young people with learning disabilities, teachers and artists. The project aims to challenge notions of disability as a limitation through collaborative activities which champion all forms of communication and self-expression. Through encounters with contemporary art practice both in galleries and working with artists, Get the Message offers innovative approaches to working with young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities.

Get the Message presents an annual exhibition and programme of events for schools, teachers, families and the general public to view works produced throughout the year. The project provides creative and professional development for all participants, including training days and a mentoring scheme for artists, and CPD for teachers and arts educators. Pupils can benefit from continuation opportunities through bursary places on courses and through participating in youth activities across Camden Arts Centre’s Education programme.

In 2011-12 we welcome pupils from The Village School in Brent, The Bridge School in Islington and Jack Taylor School in Camden to collaborate with artists Judith Brocklehurst and Georgie Manly around a year long theme of buildings and architecture. Each school will visit exhibitions at Camden Arts Centre and engage in practical activities to generate group work, which will be exhibited at the end of the school year.

Camden Arts Centre and Get the Message are shortlisted for the Clore Museum Learning Award 2012. The winner will be announced on 19 June.
