Get the Message - Camden Art Centre

Get the Message

Since 2002, Camden Arts Centre has been running Get the Message; an innovative project in which artists, in partnership with teachers, develop new approaches to working with young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. Activities place an emphasis on communication, self-expression and creative skills through encounters with contemporary art practice.

This academic year we welcome pupils from Hay Lane School in Brent, The Bridge School in Islington and Jack Taylor School in Camden to take part in activities with Judith Brocklehurst and Georgie Manly around the theme of Transformation. Each school will visit exhibitions at Camden Arts Centre, and engage in practical activities in the Drawing Studio and galleries, to generate group work which will be exhibited at the end of the school year.

In 2009 Get the Message has introduced a mentoring scheme for artists to receive support and training around planning and leading activities for children with learning disabilities. The mentoring scheme is based around sharing experience and best practice developed in the previous six years with Raine Smith, Natasha Kidd and Jo Addison, previous lead artists for Get The Message.
