Ideas for Experiments

Viyki Turnbull

1 September 2012 - 31 July 2013

Ideas for Experiments works with primary school pupils and their teachers to investigate ideas through testing the properties and possibilities of different materials. Combining lines of enquiry familiar to maths and science with approaches used in contemporary art practice, pupils engage with processes and questions that support a tangible understanding of the world around them, such as concepts of gravity, weight, measurement and balance.

Ideas for Experiments prioritises an inclusive environment for pupils with language and learning needs through hands on learning and team working. Using Camden Art Centre’s changing programme of exhibitions as a catalyst for generating ideas around materials and processes the project also looks to widen vocabulary and literacy skills.

This year the project is led by artists Judith Brocklehurst and Viyki Turnbull and works in partnership with Carlton, Edith Neville, Holy Trinity and Primrose Hill primary schools all based in the borough of Camden. Working in close dialogue with teachers the project enables not only meaningful engagement with curriculum concerns but also individual progression.

Ideas for Experiments has been running since 2010 and is funded by John Lyon’s Charity, The Rayne Foundation and The Equitable Charitable Trust.
