Teachers' Event: Working Creatively with SEND Pupils

Friday 11 October, 10.30am – 4.00pm

Aimed at teachers working with students with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), this is a full day of workshops offering practical strategies to support learning disabled students in discovering their potential through art and creativity.

The programme combines practical activities and discussion between teachers, artists and Camden Arts Centre's education team.

• Keynote presentation about Camden Arts Centre’s Get the Message project with SEND schools by Greygory Vass, Education Programmer.
The presentation will include a case study of collaboration between SEND schools, artists and art galleries on creative work with SEND pupils.

• Panel discussion with teachers Deirdre O’Flanagan, The Village School and Ryan McClelland, The Bridge School.
The panel discussion invites teachers from partnership schools to reflect on the legacy of Get the Message in their schools and the importance of working with the arts.

• Breakout sessions with artists Georgie Manly, Judith Brocklehurst, Adam Walker and Emma McGarry.
Breakout sessions will introduce activities led by artists with SEND pupils in practical ways, for teachers to have the opportunity to develop new ideas, test new materials and consider new ways of working with SEND pupils.

• Plenary session with Greygory Vass
The plenary session brings together the experiences of Get the Message with the teachers present. The discussion provides a chance to reflect on the importance of creativity for SEND pupils, strategies for enabling pupils with complex needs to engage in the arts, and ways activities could be adapted in schools.

Camden Arts Centre works with people with multiple and profound learning disabilities through the Get the Message project, which has been running for 12 years. Get the Message aims to challenge perceptions of disability as a limitation through activities which champion all forms of communication and self-expression. The project brings together art galleries, SEND schools, pupils and families and alongside this Camden Arts Centre offers professional development for teachers and artists involved with this work.

Costs for the event have been subsidised and tickets include lunch and refreshments.
