Creative Writing
Beginning with the idea of writing as voice, this course examines the practice of writing, following the development of a text through its inception, realisation, distribution and reception. The course will reflect on examples from fiction and contemporary critical writing through discussion, short writing and editing exercises and the development of a longer, personal work. The course is suitable for beginners and those wishing to advance their skills.
The group will use the Shelagh Wakely and Glenn Ligon exhibitions as inspiration alongside a number of printed texts including Necessity: To Become an Author, Yve Lomax, published in The Happy Hypocrite, Issue 4, Autumn/Winter 2009; MAN AARG! Poetry, Essay, Art Practice, David Berridge, published in 2013 by NO Demand, the imprint of X Marks the Bökship; This Condition, Lydia Davis in The Collected Stories of Lydia Davis, Penguin, 2009
Each week the group will expand on their skills as writers and learn how to apply them, focusing on the following topics:
Introducing Voice: What is the voice in writing?
Giving voice: ‘a conversation with someone else using the object as an intermediary’
Methods: Recording, observing, gathering
Inscriptions: Getting it down on paper
The script: New page forms
The form of the thing: Frontispieces and title pages
The reader: Reading and editing
Reading aloud: Performance strategies of the voice: humour and timing
Distribution: Chance operations and dissemination

Julia graduated from Goldsmiths with an MFA in Art Writing. She has run writing workshops at Royal College of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art and regularly does readings in venues across London.
