Ceramics – Core techniques

Introducing students to different ceramic techniques including slab building, coiling, press moulding, surface decoration and glazing, this is an excellent course for beginners and for those looking to refresh their ceramics skills. All materials are provided.

Demonstrations will focus on the following techniques:

Week 1: Coiling
Week 3: Slip decoration, transfer prints, masking, resists and painting
Week 4: Slab building
Week 6: Throwing, off the hump, and coil and throw plate
Week 8: Glazing/ decoration, oxides, siccatives, paper and digital transfers

This course focuses on individual students needs in developing personal projects from techniques taught throughout the course. Students are encouraged to keep sketchbooks which will facilitate recording details of glazes and techniques as well as enhancing the design process.

Alan graduated from Goldsmiths in 1991 and has been tutoring ceramics for more than 20 years.
