Ceramics – Core Techniques

Introducing students to different ceramic techniques including slab building, coiling, press moulding, surface decoration and glazing, this is an excellent course for beginners and for those looking to refresh their ceramics skills. All materials are provided.

Week 1
Introduction to working with clay, followed by demonstrations of basic clay techniques of pinching, thumb pots and slab building.

Week 2
Introduction to coiling as a construction process.

Week 3
Introduction to glazing techniques including painting, dipping, pouring, underglaze and onglaze.

Week 4
Introduction to slip decoration techniques including scrafitto, inlay, monoprinting and slip trailing.

Week 5 and 6
Introduction to sprig moulding techniques.

Week 7, 8, 9 and 10
Students will work on individual projects; combining the processes and techniques learnt in earlier weeks. Students will also have and introduction to the surface decoration technique – water erosion.

Tutor: Katie Spragg
Katie graduated from Brighton University in 2010. Working with ceramics, plastics and illustration, she regularly lead workshops for both adults and children.
