The exhibition brings together work by 12 internationally respected Chicano, Irish and Mexican artists: Willie Doherty, David Fox, Javier de la Garza, Silvia Gruner, Francis Hegarty, John Kindness, Alice Maher, Daniel J. Martinez, Amalia Mesa-Bains, Philip Napier, Rubén Ortiz Torres and John Valadez, and includes painting, photography, sculpture, video and installation.
Mexico and Ireland, apparently two very different countries, have much in common in terms of their history and culture, partly as a result of having developed in the shadow of powerful neighbours. The juxtaposition of works by artists from both cultures not only highlights this common ground, but also creates the possibility for new meanings and dialogues to arise.
The exhibition was curated by Trisha Ziff in association with Camden Arts Centre, Ikon Gallery, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, and Santa Monica Museum of Art. It has been supported by: the International Initiatives Fund of the Arts Council of England; US/Mexico Fund for Culture; The Rockerfeller Foundation, USA; Fundación BBVA Bancomer, Mexico, Irish Department of Foreign Affairs; The Arts Council (Ireland); Secretaria de Relaciones Exteriores, Mexico; British Council, Mexico, Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, Mexico.
