Rubbish & Nasty
Filmmaker, Nick Gordon and music journalist, Ian McQuaid took up residence in the space for three consecutive days of writing and story development of Rubbish & Nasty, a feature film set in London’s early noughties squat rave scene.
The Artists
Nick Gordon started as an animator and transitioned to directing music videos, short films and commercials and co-founded the production company Somesuch in 2011. His commercials and videos have won over 35 industry awards including 5 D&AD yellow pencils. His shorts have featured at a number of film festivals such as Edinburgh and Clement Ferrand. SATURDAYS SHADOW premiered at the New York Film Festival (2007) and won the Grand Prix at the Black Maria Film Festival (2008). HARD TIMES (2016) premiered at the LA shorts festival. He is currently developing longer form projects.
Ian McQuaid started DJing as a teenager in the late 1990s. He spent a decade setting up a variety of alternative art spaces, alongside playing in clubs and festivals around Europe. Latterly he switched into writing. He’s published in The Guardian, Vice, i-D, among others. He’s written and produced various music documentaries for Channel 4, the ICA, Fader and more. This year he wrote his first full length feature film about London’s 1990s squat scene. He also runs a record label that has released an Afrobeats record which has streamed over 50 million times, and a run of rap records that have been blamed by The Times for destroying society as we know it.
The Machine That Kills Bad People

Artist and filmmaker, Ben Rivers curated an evening of films including work by Gunver Nelson, Margaret Tait and Chick Strand. The Machine That Kills Bad People is a film club programmed by Erika Balsom, Beatrice Gibson, Maria Palacios Cruz and Ben Rivers screening bi-monthly at the ICA.
