Camden Arts Centre presents a group exhibition of artists working with ceramics at Art15, May 21 – 23. The selection reflects on the long history of clay, particularly the British studio potteries of the early 20th century whose legacy is still evident in the resurgence of young artists working in the medium today. Those 20th century guilds advocated one-off unique or small ‘editioned’ works. Addressing this historical precursor, the exhibition looks at how artists are working with ceramics now.
Ranging from functional table wear, objects that subvert their utilitarian status, art objects defying their inanimate materiality, to those experimenting with pigment and glaze in unprecedented ways, this project surveys the activity around Camden Arts Centre’s own ceramics studio which has been a hub of production for the past 25 years, enabling artists and the public to develop experimental work in clay. The group of artists presented includes previous resident artists and ceramic fellows as well as other artists with relationships to the Centre and some guest appearances.
