Meet like-minded people and share your passion for contemporary art

Donate a few hours a week and become part of our very special creative group. You will make new friends, connect with different communities and learn, through a range of projects and activities. We reimburse volunteers for their travel and provide training, materials and tours ahead of each new exhibition. Plus all volunteers receive a 10% discount in our café, bookshop and on our acclaimed courses.

‘The additional activities mean that in the Front of House volunteering role you’re always stimulated by something new.’ - Current volunteer

We will be taking applications in December 2016!

We currently have a full team of Volunteer Front of House Assistants but recruit at regular intervals throughout the year. Please join our mailing lists to keep up to date with our latest news, pop in and see us, or check back in December 2016.

Please note that we do not except applications made outside of the recruitment periods and CVs sent will not be kept on file. We do not offer work experience, work placements or internships. We only offer personal development opportunities through our education projects and volunteer programme. Please visit our Projects page or read on for more information about volunteering.

What's Involved?

Volunteer Front of House Assistants donate a minimum of 4.5 hours of their time a week and help us invigilate our gallery spaces, welcome visitors to the Centre and help them to gain a full appreciation of the exhibitions, events and projects. In addition to this you can share your passion for art by leading Guided Tours of the exhibitions and assisting with our Make & Do family workshops. All volunteers are invited to attend a variety of seminars and workshops and regularly get involved with projects and job shadowing opportunities not available to visitors or paid members of staff.

As the public face of Camden Arts Centre, Front of House Assistants welcome visitors and are the first point of contact between the organisation and the public. Joining Camden Arts Centre as a volunteer in this capacity would ideally suit those that have an interest in the work of the Centre, enjoy interacting with the public and work well as part of a team.

We are particularly keen to work with people interested in joining the team on a long-term basis. For your first three months of volunteering you must be able to maintain a weekly commitment to the Centre, attending Front of House shifts of 4.5 hours once a week. (We offer more flexible shift structures for volunteers who have been with the Centre for longer than three months.)

These shifts are allocated between 9.30am and 6.30pm (with a 30 minute break), Tuesday – Sunday. When volunteers come to the Centre for these shifts we refund travel up to the value of £5.50 per day and upon the provision of receipts. Refreshments of tea and coffee are available for all volunteers.

Volunteers must attend Front of House shifts in order to engage with the rest of the volunteer programme. This involves assisting artists in the running of family workshops, leading Guided Tours, attending "volunteer only" social events, seminars and workshops and getting involved with ad-hoc volunteer projects such as Testbed –catch all term for collaborative projects organised by volunteers at Camden Arts Centre.

Take a look at what past and present volunteers thought of their experiences at CAC:

‘It's a very friendly place, and I have felt included from the beginning, especially due to the regular communication with volunteers, which is really good and makes you feel part of the Centre.’

‘The staff and other volunteers are really pleasant to work with, there's a sense of mutual respect for each other no matter what one's position may be. The overall environment at Camden Arts Centre is lovely to be in, it is efficient and proactive yet relaxed and very positive.’

‘Both the interview and the training sessions were conducted in a friendly and informative way and I felt very at ease.’

‘Giving guided tours improved my public speaking skills and it was fulfilling to hear people's sincere gratitude after the tours.’

‘I really enjoy helping out during the Make & Do session, it’s great that they are free for families and the artists were really engaged in the way they lead the sessions.’

‘Volunteering has given me an insight into how the Centre works and the people involved.’

‘The hour shadowing shifts have been a great opportunity to talk with staff, to find out more about their specific roles at Camden and to hear how they got to this point.’
