Life Drawing

Saturday 28 April – Saturday 26 May
Working with clothed and unclothed models, this course developed observational drawing skills with a focus on proportion, composition, line and shading. Students worked from portrait or full figure in short and long poses using pencil and charcoal. This was a great course for beginners and those wishing to build their life drawing skills. All materials are provided.

In a friendly and supportive environment these life drawing classes provided students with the opportunity to develop their life drawing skills through individual instruction and guidance. In addition to practical drawing, the group looked at examples of work by other artists and consider the different approaches taken to the subject of life drawing.

Anthea Williams
Anthea graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1994 and regularly leads school and gallery workshops with adults, children and families.

Ceramics Techniques for Juniors

Saturday 28 April – Saturday 7 July
Combining playful ideas with an introduction to basic ceramics techniques including slab building, coiling, press moulding, glaze and surface decoration, this is a great course for budding ceramics enthusiasts with creative imaginations.

Elly graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2004 and currently produces her own ceramics alongside teaching.

Painting - Personal Style

Sunday 29 April – Sunday 8 July
The course offered the opportunity to broaden individual styles, encouraged students to develop personal projects from existing ideas and interests.  The course included some demonstration and technical guidance, while focusing on individual development. This course was best suited to those with some experience in painting.

Techniques in oils, watercolours, and acrylics will be explored, including looking at mediums, surfaces, and brushes. Students are encouraged to choose their own source material – including working from photos, portraiture, and still life.

The aim of the course was to develop a way of working with paint that suits the student. This could involve finding the best subject matter or medium for the student to work with. While the course structure introduced areas of exploration – e.g. colour mixing, composition, and perspective – the aim was for these sessions to enrich and develop the student’s own personal style.

“My expectations were that I would be encouraged and inspired and I am! In spite of my limitations in the skills area and I’m becoming more able to convey the ‘meaning’ behind what I am doing. [The] course has continued to also inspire me to gain a better understanding of contemporary art and I have made good friends through the course with whom I now regularly meet to visit exhibitions together.”

Ceramics - Core Techniques

Sunday 29 April – Sunday 8 July
Introducing students to different ceramic techniques including slab building, coiling, press moulding, surface decoration and glazing, this is an excellent course for beginners and for those looking to refresh their ceramics skills. All materials were provided.

Week 1
Introduction to working with clay, followed by demonstrations of basic clay techniques of pinching, thumb pots and slab building.

Week 2
Introduction to coiling as a construction process.

Week 3
Introduction to glazing techniques including painting, dipping, pouring, underglaze and onglaze.

Week 4
Introduction to slip decoration techniques including scrafitto, inlay, monoprinting and slip trailing.

Week 5 and 6
Introduction to sprig moulding techniques.

Week 7, 8, 9 and 10
Students worked on individual projects; combining the processes and techniques learnt in earlier weeks. Students were also offered and introduction to the surface decoration technique – water erosion.

Katie graduated from Brighton University in 2010. Working with ceramics, plastics and illustration, she regularly lead workshops for both adults and children.

Ceramics - Personal Style

Painting and Drawing - Core Techniques

Wednesday 2 May – Wednesday 11 July
This course covered principal painting and drawing techniques, exploring observation, shape, colour and surface.  Introduced a variety of media including pencil, charcoal, acrylics, watercolours and oils, an excellent course for beginners and those looking to refresh their painting practice. All materials were provided.

The course was aimed at students who want an introduction to a broad range of drawing and painting media, and to experiment working with new techniques and approaches. The course provided the majority of the subject matter, including working from portraits, self-portraits, still life, and life models.

Ceramics - Studio Project

Wednesday 2 May – Wednesday 11 July
This course invited students to practice ceramics in response to a brief, through personal interpretation and group discussion. The course provides individual support and is suitable for those with some ceramics experience who are looking for stimulation and guidance. Core materials were provided.

Using traditional techniques as a springboard for developing personal work with a contemporary twist, the first half of this course used group discussions, demonstrations and experimentation to help develop ideas and skills for personal projects students started in the second half of this course.

The main techniques this course focused on are burnishing and smoke firing alongside core hand building techniques.

Claire graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 2001 and has since set up her own studio for producing and teaching ceramics.

Introducing students to different ceramic techniques including slab building, coiling, press moulding, surface decoration and glazing, this is an excellent course for beginners and for those looking to refresh their ceramics skills. All materials were provided.

Demonstrations focused on the following techniques:

Week 1: Coiling
Week 3: Slip decoration, transfer prints, masking, resists and painting
Week 4: Slab building
Week 6: Throwing, off the hump, and coil and throw plate
Week 8: Glazing/ decoration, oxides, siccatives, paper and digital transfers

This course focused on individual students needs in developing personal projects from techniques taught throughout the course. Students were encouraged to keep sketchbooks which facilitates recording details of glazes and techniques as well as enhancing the design process.

Masterclass - Life Drawing

Sunday 22 July
Situated in a purpose-built theatrical set, artist Jake Spicer led this exciting one day life drawing class, exploring the human form in a staged environment using costume and props.  This unique class was aimed at those with experience in drawing who are looking for a rare and challenging opportunity to explore their creative techniques through a dynamic themed stage construction. Beginners were also welcome to take part in this one off life drawing experience.

Jake Spicer is Head Tutor of Drawing and founder of Brighton Life Drawing Sessions. Alongside developing his own practice, he regularly teaches both adults and children.

Clay for Infants

Tuesday 24 – Friday 27 July 2012
Developing children’s hand building techniques this course created surreal creatures, taking inspiration from folklore traditions and Bruce Lacey’s ritual performances.

Masterclass - Creative Writing

Wednesday 1 – Wednesday 8 August
Led by writer and artist Michael Crowe this master class ran over two evenings taking a playful approach to writing inspired by the artists’ experimental techniques. Through a series of whimsical exercises students were introduced to inventive and creative starting points to producing short stories. This was an excellent course for beginners and those looking for creative stimulation in their writing.

Tutor: Michael Crowe
Michael Crowe studied Creative Writing at JMU, graduating in – 2001. He has exhibited internationally, most recently at Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen and FRAC. He has appeared as a guest speaker at the BFI and the New Museum, NY. His writing, mostly short fiction, combines deadpan wit with absurd sentimentality.

Masterclass - Ceramic Smoke Firing Techniques

Saturday 4 – Saturday 11 August
Led by ceramicist Dan Stafford, this two part master class offered a unique opportunity to test smoke-firing techniques and their use in ceramics. Week one was focused on creating hand-built forms using techniques such as coiling, slab building and press moulding which were bisque fired. Students follow up in week two with masking techniques to create unique surface patterns using the smoke firing process. This was a perfect course for beginners and those looking to progress their ceramics practice into new areas.

Dan graduated from the University of Wales Institute in 2000 and has since been developing his own practice alongside teaching ceramics to adults.

Masterclass - Ceramic Moulding Techniques

Wednesday 22 – Wednesday 29 August
Led by artist Claire Bevacqua this two part master class introduced participants to plaster mould making, including press and sprigg moulds from one and two pieces. Students also had the opportunity to learn basic carving techniques that can be used for creating further detailing to sprigg moulds – this was an excellent course for beginners and those looking to inspire their practice through new materials and techniques.

Anatomical Drawing and Clay Sculpture

This course explored facial construction through clay and drawing. Building a face using clay looking particularly at muscle structure, contours, age and weight, students worked from models and saw how this can be applied directly to life drawing. All materials were provided.

Clay for Infants

Tuesday 30 October – Friday 2 November 2012
Taking inspiration from Eric Bainbridge’s exhibition, this course explored how objects communicate personal identity. Like Bainbridge, children created ‘fake’ objects from clay and played with surface decoration techniques and faux effects such as marbling, wood and wallpaper.

I didn’t have any particular expectations but I was delighted that their project was inspired by the … exhibition and that they were taken to see that first. It was lovely to have a project that was worked on over four days…

Card Making Workshop

Saturday 17 November, 2.00 – 4.00pm
Illustrator Clare Beaton hosted a Card Making Workshop in the Bookshop, teaching participants different ways of making cards in time for the holidays.

Free workshop, children must be accompanied by a guardian.

A Sculptural Experience for Juniors

Tuesday 30 October – Friday 2 November
In this course, children worked with everyday objects and different sculptural processes, together creating a unique installation which was photographed along the way. With the exhibitions as a starting point, children explored how systems and order are used in sculpture to solve fun puzzles in building and making.

Artists’ Practice Day
