13 October 2009 - 13 December 2009

Selected for this year’s Magic Lantern Residency at Camden Arts Centre, Jani Ruscica takes a collaborative approach to filmmaking. Having previously worked with scientists, theatre makers and street performers, his work often begins with the establishing a particular situation or narrative starting point which is then developed though a shared creative process. For Magic Lantern Ruscica will build on elements of animation within his previous works to make a new film based on the idea of a London travelogue. Using a variety of historical and contemporary source texts, he will work with actors and mime artists to create and film a series of narrative shadow plays reflecting the traveller’s experience of the foreign city.

This residency is the latest in the Magic Lantern animation series, the final film will be screened in March 2010, and will subsequently be available on the Animate Projects website, www.animateprojects.org.

Jani Ruscica lives and works in Helsinki.

Travelogue is supported by FRAME and the Finnish Institute in London.
