Get the Message 2014 - Camden Art Centre

Get the Message is a collaborative project between young people with learning disabilities, teachers and artists. The

The project aims to challenge perceptions of disability as a limitation through collaborative activities which champion all forms of communication and self expression. Through encounters with contemporary art practice both in galleries and working with artists, Get the Message offers innovative approaches to working with young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities.

This year, artists Emma McGarry and Adam Walker are working with The Bridge and The Village Schools, looking at the theme of memory. The year will culminate with an exhibition of students’ work and a series of events for schools and families to accompany the exhibition.

Get the Message has been running since 2002 and is currently supported by The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Outset Family, David Solomons Charitable Trust, The Goldsmiths’ Company and the Sumner Scholarship Endowment Foundation.

Get the Message is a Camden Arts Centre project working with young people and teachers from local Special Education Needs (SEN) schools and artists. During the 2014 – 15 academic year, students from The Bridge, The Village and Swiss Cottage Schools worked with artists Adam J.B. Walker and Emma McGarry to explore the theme of memory, using the exhibitions and their experiences at Camden Arts Centre as a starting point towards creating artwork.

This exhibition presents the work produced as an installation that encourages viewers to wander through a timeline of the project, encompassing sound, moving image, sculpture and photography.
